Shaft tail

The Shaft-tail Finch (also commonly called the Long-tailed Finch) is a beautiful Australian finch that is popular with bird breeders.

Basic information:

• Long-tailed Finch
• Native to northern Australia.
• Size: about 6 inches (15–16 cm).
• Lifespan: 5–10 years, sometimes longer with excellent care.
• Temperament: Peaceful, active, and social. They do best in pairs or small groups.

Appearance:

• Warm tan/buff body.
• Black bib (throat patch).
• Pale gray head.
• Bright yellow to orange beak (depending on subspecies and age).
• Long, pointed black tail, which gives them their common name.

Diet:

• High-quality finch seed mix.
• Millet sprays.
• Fresh greens (chickweed, spinach in moderation, kale).
• Egg food during breeding.
• Cuttlebone and mineral supplements for calcium.
• Fresh water daily.

Breeding:

• Usually lay 4–6 eggs.
• Incubation lasts about 13–14 days.
• Chicks fledge at around 3–4 weeks.

These finches are generally hardy and are excellent aviary birds. They can often be housed with other peaceful finch species, provided there is enough space.
